A 60-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after she was stabbed outside a church.

Theresa Moore was enjoying an evening out with her daughter when she was attacked near St Peter's Church in Drogheda town centre on Saturday night.

After receiving medical treatment at the scene on West Street she was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where she was said to be in a stable condition.

It is understood Mrs Moore and her daughter were approached and asked for a cigarette before she was stabbed a number of times.

A 36-year-old woman was arrested in the vicinity and taken to Drogheda Garda station.

She can be held for up to 24 hours under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Local Labour councillor Gerald Nash said the attack appeared completely unprovoked.

"It's completely senseless," he said.

"The community here is in shock and people are saying it could have been them, it could have been anyone."

Detectives in Drogheda have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
