Broken fencing 'puts childrens' lives at risk?

Wednesday February 13 2008

A rotten fence just two feet from the play area in the estate means children are at risk of falling over a sheer 20ft drop on the other side.

Councillor Dom Wilton said residents in the estate had contacted him because they are concerned about their children?s welfare given the hole in the fence is so close to the play area. The fence where the play area is has rotted away in one part and behind it there is an actual 22ft sheer drop onto cement and people?s gardens,? said Cllr Wilton. It is a severe drop and extremely dangerous. The fence which was put up by the developers is rotten now, it is falling apart. The council has taken the estate in charge now and I want to see some action taken to close off this gap. The drop is literally two feet away from the play area in the estate.?On health and safety grounds, the council should secure it as quickly as possible in the short term and for the long term a concrete fence is needed to make this area safe. A wooden fence is never going to last,? he said.

The councillor went on to say a child could be very seriously injured if they ran through the fence after a ball and didn?t realise the drop was there.

He said the fence needs to be secured immediately and then a plan should be formulated to secure the site permanently.
