We thought we would all die?

A Drogheda couple, who were passengers on the Qantas flight which plunged 30,000 ft out of the sky and made an emergency landing in the Philippines, have told the Drogheda Independent of their terror as they thought they were going to die.

George and Dolores Kierans from Millmount Abbey were on their way to visit their son Shane in Melbourne, when about one hour into the flight, there was a terrific boom, and the plane carrying 346 passengers and 19 crew started to dive downwards.They had just started to serve the meals when there was a really loud bang, and the plane just started to plummet out of the sky,? George told the Drogheda Independent from the safety of his Manila hotel room.The oxygen masks all dropped down and it was the strangest sensation, as there was no panic, just an eerie silence across the cabin.I think everyone was in deep shock, and remained completely calm. I?ve even heard that someone took a video of what happened.?

But even though there was an air of calm, George says there was definitely a moment when the couple both thought they were going to die.We both just thought ?this is it ? the lights are going out, goodbye,? he said.I have to give the crew and pilot their due though. He was fantastic, over 50 years of age, I?d say, and very experienced.?
