Are vintners for real?

Wednesday March 10 2010

HAVE the Vintners Federation of Ireland suddenly developed a caring side or on the other hand taken all of us for eegits?

For those who haven't been following this story there's a kafuffle among publicans that the forthcoming Magners League game between Munster and Leinster has been scheduled for Good Friday!

Now the boys behind the bar are concerned that people will be forced to sign up for unscrupulous satellite television providers at extortionate rates in order to ensure they don't miss this earthshattering encounter.

You see pubs can't open and so being the benevolent service providers they are with TVs and satellites to beat the band, our friends in the licensed trade are up in arms supposedly on behalf of the punter who can't access their premises to watch the match.

They're so worried about their clientele that they're lobbying the rugby unions in both provinces, board on management of the league and Setanta Sports to have the match brought forward twenty-four hours!

Am I being facetious or my old cynical self but could it be something to do with a loss of sales on their part? Surely we haven't reached a point where we can't stage a big match without recourse to alcohol?
