LETTER: Memories of Louis

Wednesday March 10 2010

Dear Sir, IT was with great regret that I read Louis Smith's obituary in your edition of February 17th. It was particularly poignant that he had featured in your Slice of Life column on February 10th - the very day he died.

I first met Louis 68-years-ago when he attended the CBS after the transfer of his father to Drogheda as postmaster. Even then he was playing the piano in Pat Jackson's band and Brother Bourke would get onto him when he arrived in on Monday mornings, bleary-eyed after playing a late Sunday night dance somewhere in Cavan or the midlands.

He would also call into us in Shop Street and play jazz in the 'front room' upstairs.

Yours,

Canice O'Mahony,
Ard Easmuinn,
Dundalk.
