More holes on the old Bog Road

Wednesday August 05 2009

THE phone rings (or do phones just buzz, or sing, or whatever these days?) and I'm asked the question 'are you the chap that writes about the potholes?' I guess that's me. 'You should go out to Tenure (or Tinure!) and do a story on the Bog Road. It's a disgrace!'

And, after an inspection, the caller proved to be quite correct.

The first thing that caught my eye was a sign, stating that the road would be closed for repairs. Did they know I was coming????

But sadly the sign goes back to February 2007 when presumably it was closed for repairs.

In truth, it could do with another closure but this time it would require major works as the potholes on the stretch close to the village are huge.

One lady passed me, cycling, a brave soul I must say.

Hopefully, the local councillors can make a case for some kind of repairs on the Bog Road. They are badly needed.

While I was in Tenure, I decided to have a look for the proper spelling of the place.

There are reports that Tinure only came around with the arrival of new signposting some years ago. Certainly the shop is traditional ' Tenure Stores' but then I checked one of the old gravestones at the front of the church, Fr Patrick Brady, former PP, died in 1941 and he was from TINURE!

The mystery deepens.

• JUST a reaction to the piece last week on the pubs of D rogheda. Apparently the pub before the A bbey Tavern was the A bbey Tree and for mer Drogheda player I an Hines worked in it.
