THE GREATEST treasure Fr. Sean Ryan holds is his ability to be different.

A man who never takes himself too seriously, he said a final farewell to St. Peter's parish on Saturday, retiring to life in Dromantine after decades helping others.

He has been in town for just five or six years after 42 years in Nigeria but his mark was made all the same.

A large crowd turned out for his last mass to say goodbye, something that wasn't lost on him.

' There's an old saying in Nigeria, the better the send off, the happier they are to get rid of you!' he mused.

Nine priests concelebrated the mass and St. Peter's Male Voice Choir was simply never in better voice; their rendition of 'How Great thou Art' was spine tingling.

Monsignor Jim Carroll spoke warmly of Fr. Ryan's contribution to life in Drogheda and his role in the Church over a lifetime.

'He's made a mighty contribution and no doubt in his time in Nigera enjoyed lots of yams and fish. We thank him for everything he has done,' he stated.

There was a special message from Bishop Clifford and Cardinal

Brady, lauding his service down the years.

Following the mass, a special night was organised in the Barbican, with lots of music, reminding Fr Ryan of his time in Africa, and chat and presentations from local schools.

The O'raghallaigh's even had a championship medal specially struck as a token of his support for the club.
