Retiring principal fires parting shot
1982
THE faceless people at the Department of Education came in for a bashing at a widely supported event in Dunleer parochial Hall.
It was a night to honour retired NS principal Joe Sharkey.
He remarked on the night that he told the department well in advance of his retirement date, September 1, but only got his pension in early December.
Furthermore, there was not one word of regret expressed at his decision, nor any thanks for his over 40 years service.
Fr Mulgrew PP arranged to send him to the Holy Land as a parting gift.
Padraig Faulkner TD said that he had known Joe from way back in the days they were in training college in Dublin.
Other tributes came from Padraig O Neil, OS, Cnoc Bride, John Flanagan, Paddy Boyle and Tomas O Fachtna who had taken over from Joe as principal.
