We saved Romans!

Wednesday March 10 2010

I'VE been reading in our files about Drogheda oatmeal, or McCann's Oatmeal, once the saviour of the people of Rome apparently.

Towards the end of WWII McCann and Hill's Oatmeal was shipped to Europe for prisoners and other victims of war, packed in 3lb tins with wrappers in Irish, English, French, German and Polish. However, getting the tins to those intended was difficult and most were diverted to the Vatican City to be handed out to the people of Rome.

A further shipment in 1945 went to France and the Irish Red Cross unit based at St Lo, devastated after the war.

McCann's also shipped to the United States and I can only imagine was a huge business. How this town could do with an indigenous industy like oatmeal production today.
