A treasure on our doorstep

Wednesday February 01 2012

WE talk a lot about what Drogheda has to offer and its great buildings and works of art.

But at times, I don't think we appreciate what we have in front of us enough.

Take, for instance, The Passion Window by Harry Clarke, one of the best stained glass artists ever.

Located at the rear of the Augustinian Church on Shop Street, it has a remarkable history.

It was fitted in the tower in 1928 and restored in 1994 and refitted in its present location then. It's dedicated to the wonderful Fr. Jim Kiely OSA who did so much great work in his life.

A plaque beside the window states it was erected by friends in memory of Fr. Denis Augustine Crotty who spent 20 years in the Augustinian Church and died in 1932.

The detail on the window is superb and well worth a look.
