Barton Cup golf news

Wednesday September 01 2010

LAYTOWN/ Bettystown got off to a flying start in the first leg of the Barton Cup when they won the first leg away to Dunmurry Hills (Kildare) by three matches to two. Seamus Ward and Tom Reid came from 4 down to win by 1 up, an astounding comeback. JD McGinn and Ivan Feran won on the 17th and Brian Crinion and Philip Duff won their match on the 19th. Padraig Rafferty and young Robert Browne went down fighting, losing on the 20th. Tadgh McHugh and Robert carter also went down to one of Dunmurry's strongest pairs.

So it's advantage to L& B with the second leg to be played in Laytown Bettystown on 11th September, next Saturday week.

I'm sure that managers Paul Browne and Michael O'Connor will advise the panel that the fat lady has yet to sing. Having said that I am almost certain that I heard her clearing her throat.

This was a fine win, all the more so as L&B were without one of their top pairings in the shape of Ollie O'Sullivan and young John Blood.

This pair won all of their five previous matches. Young John was unable to play on Saturday last due to circumstances beyond his control. Finally, we must not forget that it's only half time.
