CHRISTY Grimes may have been thrilled to be presented with the Drogheda Independent Sportstar of the Year trophy but there was an even more important delivery in store as wife Linda gave birth just days after the ceremony.

Megan Eliabeth Grimes arrived shortly after noon on Monday, March 8th, weighing 6lbs 13oz, just two days after Linda had attended the awards with Christy.

The baby will be a sibling for the couple's first chid, two-year-old Karl.

'I'm due next week so hopefully there'll be no extra presentations tonight!' laughed Linda on Friday.

'I'm delighted for him, and really shocked. I could see Gerry Kelly looking down as he announced it and I thought he was looking past us.'

She admitted there must be something in the Collon water as both David Brennan and Michael Englishby's wives gave birth within weeks of the team winning the Joe Ward Cup last year.

Although delighted to be nominated for the award and even more thrilled to win, Christy's main priority was making sure Linda was okay and even had a relative on standby in case the excitement proved too much.

'I'm the back-up in case anything happens and I have to drive Linda to the hospital,' explained his aunt, Elizabeth Noone.

Hopefully the baby's arrival won't be as much of a shock as the overall award which Christy was gobsmacked to receive.

'This was the last thing I expected, I didn't even have my jacket on!' a shocked Christy told Gerry Kelly.

It was very much a family affair for Christy who was also joined by his mum Anne Grimes and proud granny Betty Rafferty as well as his aunt Alison Gough and his brother's girlfriend, Gráinne Weldon.

2009 proved an amazing year for Mattock Rangers who scooped the Joe Ward Cup for the third time and the cup proved a good luck charm as Christy's supporters brought it along to the Boyne Valley Hotel.

'This is really for the team, it's about Mattock Rangers tonight. I've played with them for the past 15 years and we came from nothing to achieve what we did,' he said.
