SCOIL Aonghusa kids are all abuzz after working with local artist, Darrin Finnegan on a graffiti mural as part of the Boyne Valley Honey National Book of Kells Art Competition.

'We are delighted our school was chosen to host the Book of Kells themed graffiti work of art. Our students were involved in the process and really enjoyed learning all about The Book of Kells and of course, using the modernism of graffiti to create a work of art,' said Scoil Aonghusa, principal, Edel Ní Bhroin.

Finnegan added: 'This is a great way to get the kids involved in creating their own, bespoke piece of art that they can enjoy for some time to come.

'I am delighted to be participating in such an innovative initiative. Encouraging our children to be creative and have the confidence to express themselves artistically is very worthwhile.'

Primary, secondary and third level students and adults are all invited to submit a work of art on the subject of their choice, using either the Book of Kells itself, the monks who wrote and illustrated it or life in nineth century Ireland as inspiration.

Each month until February 2010, a finalist will be chosen from each category, with all finalists going head-to-head in the grand finale in March 2010.

The graffiti will act as the school's entry to the competition and they could be in with a chance to win one of three Fine Art Facsimiles of The Book of Kells which will be presented to the primary and secondary winning schools and to the individual from the third level and adult category, with runners up receiving cash prizes of € 100, € 250 and € 500.
