THERE were sport stars, sequins and glitter galore at this year's Drogheda Independent Sport Star of the Year Awards.

Family and friends donned their finery to help the 12 nominees celebrate the big night in the Boyne Valley Hotel.

Tom and Patty Murphy were there showing their support for future son-in-law and GAA star Thomas Costello who will marry the couple's daughter, Eimear on August 2nd this year.

Asked if they were fans of GAA, Tom revealed: 'I'm originally from Kerry so I couldn't not be a Gaelic supporter!'

Thomas's parents, Bernadette and Derek were also enjoying the evening along with this brother Niall, Audrey Lynch and boyfriend Barry Sharkey, Andrea McCarthy, Brian Kermode, Ciara Neilis and wife-to-be Eimear Murphy.

Looking glamorous were sisters Ruth and Christine Burke who were at the awards with Jacqui Skelly as guests of Coca Cola.

Teenager Craig Fay, who was nominated for his outstanding performance with the Irish ice hockey team, was joined by parents, Deborah and William, and proved to be a chip off the old block as he explained his passion for the sport came from his dad.

'I used to play and I'm president of the Irish Hockey Association,' revealed William, a former team Ireland senior player.

'It's great to get some recognition for the sport. It is a minority sport at the moment but now with the ice rink in Dundalk we're hoping it will grow.'

Showing their support for footballer Padraig Rath were friends James Califf, Laurence Kirwan and Padraig Smith who said friends and family had been canvassing hard in Clogherhead for him to win.

Looking stunning was Hazel Rock who was there with Meath gaelic footballer Joe Sheridan, who was also joined by his parents, Geraldine and Damien.

'I'm not even thinking about winning the award, it's just a huge honour to be nominated and to receive the monthly award,' said Joe.

Others soaking up the atmosphere on the night included Ann Fanning, Maria Huston and Cindy Ye as well as Noel and Patricia O'Connor.

Rugby player Niall Ronan was joined by girlfriend Jaimie Kierans, parents Theresa and Finbar and Boyne Rugby's Seamie Briscoe.
