Jerry's painting makes 'Book of Kells' shortlist

Wednesday March 10 2010

TEN-year-old Drogheda student Jerry Owens has been named as one of the primary school finalists in the Boyne Valley Honey National Art Competition.

Jerry produced a bespoke work of art based on the brief of using inspiration from either the Book of Kells itself, the monks who wrote and illustrated the tome, or life in the 9th century.

Speaking about his picture, Jerry said: 'A lady came to give our school a presentation on the Book of Kells, and then my teacher (Ciarán Shaugh) helped our whole class create a painting to enter the competition.

'I spent about three or four hours on my painting. I got some ideas from a book my teacher had and I used markers and card paper for my painting. I also am very proud of my painting because if you look closely you will see I included the Drogheda flag, so it's extra special!'

The judges said they felt Jerry's painting was a very personal interpretation of the brief with excellent detail and a huge amount of effort.

Jerry's school now goes forward to the final later this month, and is in with a chance to win a Fine Art Facsimile copy of the Book of Kells worth (US)$20,000.

Three Fine Art Facsimiles of The Book of Kells worth $20,000 each will be presented to the primary and secondary winning schools and to the individual from the third level and adult category, with runners up receiving cash prizes of € 100, € 250 and € 500.
