BIG MATCH
Our very own, Albion Rovers U12 team will play a huge match in Monasterboice on Saturday next, February 4th. The young lads have reached the final 32 in the FAI National Cup Competition and have been drawn to play at home against Cork's Lakewood Athletic, with a 2pm kick off. This is a fantastic achievement for the green and blacks to have come so far, as the competition boasted over 300 teams at the outset, from all over the country. This particular team has lots of local lads on the team and they would genuinely appreciate as much support on the day as possible.
The visitors may hail from the biggest county in the country and the hosts from the smallest, but here's to The Wee men overcoming the Rebels.
CREDIT UNION QUIZ
The very best of luck to all the local children from Tenure and Harestown schools who will do a battle of wits with each other in The Annual Credit Union Quiz, which takes place on Saturday afternoon next in the Naomh Mairtin Hall. Previous quiz winners have represented us with great distinction, at provincial and national level, in the past, and threes no reason to believe more of the same will happen after Saturday's winners emerges.
SCOTTISH NIGHT
A memorable "Scottish Night" was hosted by Monasterboice Twinning Association on Friday last. .Music, song and dance were on the menu in Naomh Mairtin hall as Scots, and Irish alike, enjoyed the festivities.
A traditional meal of tatties, neeps and haggis was washed down with nips of strong Scotch whiskey. The food was prepared by Michael Devine, Alison and Gerard Charleson.
The haggis was addressed by Gerald, accompanied on the bagpipes by Dermot Carragher. Neil Mc Kellar recited a poem by Robbie Burns. Other Scots, living locally, who attended were Agnes Joyce, Lynn Brennan and Sheila Winters.
Musically, local talent was to the fore and included Áine Nic an Ríogh, Aonghus Rooney, Cara Farrell Lynn, Dick Murphy, Pat Dillon, Michael Flanagan, Hugh Murphy and Bartle Woods. Naomh Mairtin Scór na nóg Dancers and Singers performed impressively and were supplimented by the Termonfeckin Set dancers led by John Mc Evoy. Chris Douglas performed the role of MC with aplomb.
A great night was had by all. And relations between Monasterboice and its Scottish twin, Letham, can only have been strengthened by this festive occasion.
CONFIRMATION
Another gentle reminder that Confirmation in the parish will take place on Thursday, March 1st, at 11am in Tenure church. Getting ever close.
AMEN
I've been asked to let all men, young and not so, that a support group for all who suffer from stress or anxiety takes place locally each Monday from 8 to 10pm. Sounds like a very needy service that no one should feel they are above when things get a bit overwhelming. A Kate Markey on 046 9023718 will put you in the right direction.
PRESENTATION NIGHT
Naomh Mairtin u18's will receive their League County medals at the Mairtin's Senior Social evening in The Monasterboice Inn on Feb 10th at 9pm. More anon.
JUVENILE REGISTRATION
Naomh Mairtin Juvenile club will hold it's Registration Evening on Friday, 24th Feb between 7.30 and 9pm. €30 per player, second child €20 and all thereafter costing you nothing.
SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Just a reminder that today is the first day of February and hence the first of Spring and you could do a lot worse than get yourself to Faughart this evening, where a very spiritually uplifting procession, in honour of the county's patron saint, Bridget, will take place. It probably will be cold, it definitely will be bereft of natural light, but it will be overflowing with that certain something that isn't as tangible.
