New book tells wonderful story of our own John Boyle O'Reilly

Wednesday February 01 2012

MUCH has been written about John Boyle O'reilly down the years but surely the latest publication on his life is the best yet.

Ian Kenneally has written 'From The Earth, A Cry' and it centres on the life and times of the Dowth man.

It is an inspirational book in parts and richly detailed, giving a real understanding of the man at the heart of it all.

With the National Famine Commemoration taking place in Drogheda this year, and Boston hosting the international one, our links with the great American city, where O'reilly settled, are truly marvellous.

The likes of John F Kennedy quoted from Boyle O'reilly when he visited Ireland in 1963, his story typical of the great IrishAmerican past.

O'reilly was many things, a poet, writer, revolutionary and even a British soldier at one stage.

His escape to America from Australia in 1869 is a marvellous tale of the human spirit for freedom.

Maybe this book will finally persuade Hollywood's greatest to make a film about a remarkable man who used to work where Boyd's store is today on West Street when he was employed in the Drogheda Argus newspaper.
