THE principal of Our Lady's College, Greenhills, Padraig Byrne has announced he is retiring from the position, with this his final year after 24 years at the helm.

'I've been a good while here alright, and almost a quarter of a century as principal, so I decided it was time to hand over to someone with youth, energy and new enthusiasm,' says Padraig.

'I think the position will be advertised in the press in the coming days.'

A native of Wicklow, Padraig began working in the school 38 years ago, and had tremendous memories of his time in Greenhills.

'We have had some great successes over the years, and without wanting to pick anything in particular, I have to mention our debate teams, the mock trials, our student exchange programme, the Young Scientist exhibition and many, many more,' recalls Padraig.

'I have a fantastic staff here and you need a good team like that behind you to achieve so much.'

Padraig will now enjoy a somewhat early retirement with his wife Josephine and their five sons.

But how will such a busy man now fill his time?

'I've been thinking about that and I might learn a new language, read all those books I've been promising to read, or maybe take some computer courses and get myself up to speed,' he says with a smile.

'It's been a great few years, and I will miss it, and along with the students and staff, I do want to thank the Drogheda Independent for many years of support.'
