SENATOR FEARGAL Quinn, officially opening the Drogheda Schools' Careers Night in St. Joseph's Secondary School, Drogheda, has praised the vital work being done by School Guidance Counsellors and has promised to do what he can to reverse the serious Government-cut backs in this area.

He called on all young people to stay in education, to explore their abilities and interests and to always seek the advice of their professional School Guidance Counsellor when making choices about the future. Crucially the students should choose a course or career in which they are particularly interested.

St. Joseph's Senior Prefect, Mark Hoey, thanked Senator Feargal Quinn for his words of encouragement and support and presented him with a book of Wildlife Photography, which contained many images taken by Drogheda-born ecologist, Billy Clarke, who works in UCD.

Over 700 people attended the Student Careers' Evening from Drogheda's six second-level schools.

Over fifty careers and colleges were represented from architecture to zoology. The Gardai, the Defence Forces and the Fire Service were all represented.

Students and parents gained very valuable advice and information on future career paths. Of particular interest to students this year were the technology, multi-media and health care professions, but every student found a number of career paths of particular interest to them.

Seán O Briain, spokesperson for the School Guidance Counsellors who organised the very successful event, thanked all the career and college representatives for giving so freely of their time to assist the students. He thanked the students and parents for attending in such large numbers, and the Parents' Councils from various schools who organised a petition to protest against cut backs in the School Guidance and Counselling Service. He also paid tribute to the ten senior prefects from St. Joseph's who did Trojan Work on the night, to ensure everything went smoothy and successfully.

'Senator Feargal Quinn promoted the concept of local heroes, and this guidance event again highlights what schools and a local community can achieve by working together in the interests of all our young people,' Seán added.
