Addict asks to return to detox centre

Wednesday July 28 2010

HEROIN addict, Liza Kevitt pleaded with Judge David Anderson to remand her back to Dochas Centre in Mountjoy after she appeared in Drogheda District Court on a number of charges including criminal damage, theft and taking a vehicle.

The 22-year-old mother-of-one, whose address was given as 233 Moneymore, told the court that she has been on remand in Dochas for the past seven weeks.

She wants to continue the detox programme at the Dublin prison, she told the judge.

Kevitt solicitor, Paul Moore said his client had stolen €34.84 of property from Boots, The Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk on May 28th because she wanted to be arrested so she could get back into Dochas.

Confirming that Kevitt has only two previous convictions for public order matters, Paul Moore, said his client admitted that she had broken a window and caused €150 worth of criminal damage at Cedarwood Park, Cox's Demesne, Dundalk, also on March 28th.

'She thought the house was vacant and she broke a window because she had nowhere to sleep,' he said.

When Kevitt was arrested and brought to Dundalk garda station, she was searched and two bags of heroin worth €50 were found.

On May 16th, Kevitt also allegedly took a vehicle's keys and drove the vehicle onto the Castletown Road where she was arrested.

On May 28th, she allegedly took property from Boots and the following day, she is accused of taking property worth €10.50 from Penney's, also in Dundalk.

Judge Anderson asked Kevitt if she wanted to go back to the Dochas Centre and detox from heroin.

When she said; 'Yes,' he ordered a probation report, remanded her in continuing custody and adjourned the case until August 19th when she will appear in Dundalk Courthouse.

He recommended that she continue a detox programme.
