CLOGHERHEAD was in shock after local man, Errol Dunne (pictured left) was gravely assaulted on Harbour Road, early on Sunday morning. The 25-year-old fisherman from a popular, wellknown family was out among crowds of people, many of whom were celebrating parish confirmations, which took place earlier.

Parish priest, Fr Paul Clayton Lea said the community was devastated following the attack.

'It is of the utmost importance to us that we solve this incident,' added Gardaí Superintendent Gerry Smith.

From a large family, Errol's father, Anthony, is deceased and his mother, Cepta Dunne has moved from the family home in O'Donnell Park to Grangebellew.

Well known in the Clogherhead area, Errol had worked for a number of years as a fisherman. CROWDS of people who were out celebrating on Clogherhead's Harbour Road may have vital information for gardaí who are trying to find out what happened to Errol Dunne.

The 25-year-old Clogherhead man was found with head injuries by emergency services who were called to Harbour Road at 1.50am last Sunday.

He was struck on the face and suffered head injuries which left him in a critical condition. The Clogherhead native remained in grave condition in the intensive care unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital at the time of going to press.

A large crowd of people, many of whom celebrating local confirmations, were in the area when Errol was struck according to gardaí. 'It is of the utmost importance to us that we solve this incident and these people come forward with any information,' said Superintendent Gerry Smith.

Errol is the son of Anthony, who is deceased, and Cepta Dunne. He is the brother of Gillian, Andrew, Wayne, Aaron, Claudine, Janice and Alison.

The family grew up in O'Donnell Park although Cepta is believed to have recently built a house in the Grangebellew area, where she is originally from.

Errol is well known in the Clogherhead area and had worked for a number of years as a fisherman with local boat owners.

The area around the Harbour Road was cordoned off on Sunday as forensic examinations were carried out.

Appealing for information in relation to the serious assault on Errol, Superintendent Smith said an incident room has been set up inside Drogheda garda station. A full-scale investigation is continuing and house-to-house inquiries are taking place.

'We would be asking anyone who was in the vicinity or on Harbour Road in the early hours of Sunday morning to contact us on 9874200,' he added.
