Boyne 10k promising to be even bigger and better
POPULAR RACE TO TAKE PLACE IN MAY

The start of the 2011 Boyne 10k.
IT WAS one of the highlights of the sporting calendar in Drogheda last year, drawing over 1,100 entrants and raising over €19,000, and details of Boyne 10k 2012 were announced in the Laurence Town Centre at the weekend.
The event will take place this year on Sunday May 6th, and the start time has once again been changed, this time to 3pm, shortly after the Battle on the Boyne Raft Race finishes.
Claire Grogan of the Drogheda and District Athletics Club says they are constantly improving the race, and she is delighted that funds raised this year will go to local charity The Tania Mccabe Foundation.
'It will be the same route as the last two years, but we have decided on the earlier start time to make it a more family- friendly day, with the children's races again,' she says.
'It will be €20 to register before March 31st, and €25 after that, and we are hoping to have around 1,500 competitors, making it one of the biggest road races in the country already.'
The race has raised over €50,000 in total since the first one was held in 2010, and the Mccabe family were thrilled to be chosen as recipients for their foundation.
'I have to say a big thank you in advance to all those who will run and raise funds for the foundation,' he told the assembled crowds. 'As many will know, Tania dies in Our Lady of Lourdes in 2007; she had been expecting twins and herself and Zac unfortunately died, and her husband Aidan wants to keep Tania's name alive, and the money for the foundation will go towards buying specialised equipment for the Lourdes and for Holles Street, where twin Adam spent some time.'
This year, two well-known locals, comedian Joe Rooney and former golfer Gary Murphy, will take part and write blogs about their progress.
Race director Gerry O'connor also thanked the many sponsors who have come on board this year to support the race, including State Street, Coca Cola Europe, Funtasia, Barney Flanagan (physiotherapy), the Laurence Town Centre and the d Hotel.
'We're hoping that some funds will also go towards improving running facilities in Drogheda,' adds Claire, 'and if anyone wants to sign up, you can do it online on www.boyne10k.ie, and you can also find training tips and more there too.'
