A NEWLY-married Lithuanian couple could be the source of the mysterious lights seen over Drogheda last New Year's Eve.

A number of people reported seeing strange lights over the town and the whole episode has remained a nagging puzzle - until now.

Edita Nausedaite and husband Aurimas were married in Drogheda on December 10th last but decided to have their major celebrations on New Year's Eve.

And those celebrations included releasing huge balloons into the sky. 'I know the Drogheda

Independent ran a story at the time and there has been quite a bit of talk about it since then, but we might be the cause of all the debate!,' Edita stated.

Just before midnight, her friends released 10 of the giant balloons, with lights, rising high into the sky from Roscoill. Over in Trinity Street, another five to seven were freed.

'Perhaps it was our balloons that people saw,' Edita added.
