Bypass Slane event

Wednesday August 19 2009

THE message was loud and clear when a fundraiser for the Bypass Slane Campaign was held in the village recently.

Boyle's Pub was packed to capacity as locals lent their support to get the HGV ban implemented in Slane.

A trad session by local musicians formed the centrepiece of the night with an auction, raffle, a best dressed man competition and a barbecue also taking place.

Oliver Usher got the bidding off to a flying start at the auction and it wasn't long before locals were trying to outdo one another.

Some of the items up for auction included tickets to see The Dubliners at Vicar Street, tickets to the Meath match at Croke Park the following day, a print by local artist Liam O'Broin, and the services of a carpenter and a tiler for half a day each.

Wearing white tshirts bearing Bypass Slane Campaign logo, organisers were delighted with the response on the night, especially to the auction.

'We exceeded all our expectations,' said Niamh O'Broin, who added that money was still coming in so the final figure had not been determined yet.

'People were very supportive and their generosity will enable us to move forward with the campaign.'

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to continue lobbying all responsible authorities, fund an awareness campaign including car stickers and posters, and set up a website.

Niamh added: 'It is our aim to get a website up and running within the next couple of months and distribute car stickers around the locality.'

The group would like to thank all the local busineses who kindly supported the event and who sponsored prizes for the raffle.
