THE proposals for new pay parking areas on the Dublin Road, Stockwell Street and Sunday's Gate (Geraldine's hair salon) will undergo a period of public display, it was agreed at Monday's meeting of Drogheda Borough Council.

The proposal will include long-term parking, with a suggestion of € 2 a day, at the new spaces on the Dublin Road, with provision for a new loading bay for a number of businesses along that stretch, namely the launderette, wine shop and public house.

'I feel this will just make the Dublin Road an extension of the railway station,' said Cllr Anthony Donohoe.

'I thought the whole point of putting in pay parking was because of the turnover of customers.

'To turn the spaces in front of people's houses into all-day parking will cause untold problems for family members and carers along that road.'

Town Clerk Joan Martin pointed out there will always be challenges with pay parking, and it happens that it starts moving further out of town.

'The other solution would be that some spaces were short-term and some long-term but I feel that would only cause confusion,' she said.

Cllr Frank Gallagher added that putting in pay parking usually means you are pushing the problem somewhere else.

'I know I've said this before, but a bus service from residential areas to the rail station would go a long way to solve the problem,' he said.

Cllr Paul Bell responded that they had just granted planing permission for 100 extra parking spaces for the railway station, and that should ease the burden.

It was also agreed to look at an extra loading bay for Stockwell Street, and long-term parking at Mary Street and Barrack Lane.
