Commuters' car thefts warning
POSTERS HANDED OUT IN GORMANSTON
Wednesday March 10 2010
THE Stamullen Community Alert Group has launched a campaign to warn commuters about thefts from cars parked at Gormanston Railway Station.
Members of the group handed out rime prevention leaflets to early morning commuters and were backed up by the gardai who also distributed the leaflets at Laytown station and City North Hotel.
'It may appear to be obvious but it needs reinforcing, car break-ins are largely opportunistic: leave something you may regard as low in value lying on a seat, a thief will steal it, he doesn't know its value and you end up losing hundreds of euro in criminal damage,' a spokesperson for the group stated.
This leaflet is reproduced in poster form and on the dedicated Community Alert noticeboard in Centra. Special thanks to Centra for this sponsorship from the group.
Community Alert have sited a number of posters highlighting the Senior Help Line service (LoCall 1850 440444) on the noticeboard in Centra, and in the church and doctors' surgeries.
People call, for example, if they are lonely, isolated, depressed, worried about a health, or have family or financial problems.
It is available every day from 10am–4pm and 7pm–10pm. Leaflets will be available from from Kathleen Gough and also ICA.
Laytown gardaí recently held a presentation in Whytes, Stamullen, hosted by the Community Alert group, at which Marie Greenan of the CARI Foundation gave a lecture on child safety.
The meeting was chaired by Sgt Trevor Dooley who spoke and took questions from the gardaí perspective.
With the worries from recent media cases, it was felt that a specialist, Ms Greenan, working in tandem with the gardaí in crime prevention, would be helpful allaying parents' fears.
The CARI Foundation is Ireland's leading provider of specialist support and education for children and families in the area of child sexual abuse and they lecture at venues and schools throughout the country.
'There is a great deal of misinformation and disinformation circulating and there was a need for residents to be made aware of the facts on this most sensitive of subjects. We believe these lectures can be of immense benefit to parents and the community in general.'
Special thanks to Garry Dunne of Centra who sponsored the meeting. More community-related forums are planned in the coming months including one on Drugs Awareness and Crime Prevention.
