Councillor fighting to keep the District Court Office in Drogheda

Wednesday February 01 2012

THE BATTLE to retain court services in Drogheda will be taken to the next meeting of the borough council.

Cllr Frank Maher has called on the Courts Service to remove any threat to the future of the District Court Office in the town and has submitted a motion on the retention of the office for the next meeting of Drogheda Borough Council.

'People in the town and surrounding area are very concerned at a threat by the Courts Service to remove the District Court Office from Drogheda. It is difficult to understand why this is even being considered as it is one of the busiest offices in the county. The district court office provides vital services particularly on family law issues. It handles on a daily basis sensitive issues relating to domestic violence and guardianship of children. It is vital that people who are in a vulnerable state have access to advice and guidance locally. It would be unacceptable that anybody in such a situation would have to travel to Dundalk to get this help,' he said.

He said Drogheda Borough Council had made an offer of a suitable premises to the Courts Service and this should be accepted.
