Death of former newspaper correspondent
Wednesday March 03 2010
THE death took place recently of a former Drogheda Independent correspondent who was much loved around her home town of Balbriggan.
Eily Daly formerly of Hopeville, Drogheda Street, Balbriggan was born in the town to Patrick and Kate Curran Daly.
Eily went on to spend her entire life immersed in the activities of the town.
Educated at Loreto Convent Balbriggan, she completed her learning at Gregg Commercial College in Dublin.
Her first job was working for G.L. McGowan Solicitors before accepting the position of Town Clerk at the old Town Hall.
Her next position was librarian at the local library where she remained until she had to retire to care for her special sister Jane.
She also held the position of Peace Commissioner and was also a reporter for the Drogheda Independent covering all Co. Dublin events including county council meetings and all local court hearings.
In Eily's earlier years she was involved with the local branch of the Gaelic League. She was also one of the founder members of Balbriggan Dramatic Society.
In latter years Eily and Jane both became ill and for the last 11 years of their lives were living in St. Clares Nursing Home, Stamullen. Sadly they both passed on within a few months of each other.
Eily's many friends and relations remained faithful to the end.
Their popularity was reflected in the large attendance at their funerals.
They were laid to rest the St. Peter's & Paul's cemetery, Balbriggan.
