Detectives explore murder of father in 2003
GARDA Cold Case detectives are working on aspects of the murder of Lee Conkey near Togher in 2003 to see if a new investigation can take place into the 32-year-old's death.
Lee Conkey (32) was half-naked when he was found lying face down near a remote quarry in Togher on a Saturday afternoon. It was confirmed he had been strangled.
It was reported the body was at the location for less than 24 hours after two local people found it around 3 p.m.
Gardai were reported to be investigating a possible INLA link to the murder, with suspicions arising that the deceased had been a member of that organisation.
Mr. Conkey and his family had moved to Dublin after petrol bomb attacks on his home in Larne, Co. Antrim in 1997. There had been claims that he was killed elsewhere and the body dumped in Togher, although some kind of local knowledge would have been needed in relation to the location.
The father of two, who resided in Dublin's south inner city, was found by a farmer checking his crops.
A Garda spokesman said at the time that they could not 'rule anything out' in their investigation of the murder.
One of the items that drew a lot of attention was Mr. Conkey's motor cycle, a black and silver Yamaha 1000cc. reg. no. 03-D56939, which was missing.
