REIGNING national brass band champions Drogheda Brass Band were given a major lift recently when they had great success in the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Band (IABCB) North East Region's solo and ensemble contests held in Ardee.

The ensemble contest was held in the Bohemian Centre, where a total of 13 ensembles from five bands, comprised of 60 players, competed in four sections.

Adjudicator was Brendan Breslin (assistant conductor, Dublin Concert Band; tuba, Garda Band; percussionist; composer and arranger) who was very impressed with the standard of performance on display.

In the U-18

section, Drogheda Brass Band came out on top when Conor Rothwell, Grace English, Eoin Tunstead, Amy Townley, Stephen Conlan and Ian McCormack played Danserye by Tylman Susato.

Their score of 85 was enough to hold off a strong challenge from Ardee Concert Band and Mullingar Town Band.

The winners were quick to point out the help they received from teachers Sarah Flood and Mark Nutley.

Mark himself was still on a high having performed brilliantly at the solo contest held at the end of January in the same venue.

There were 38 soloists performing that day in four different categories under adjudicator James McCafferty of the Garda Band.

Mark finished second behind his fellow bandsman Stephen Murray who was announced as winner of the open section on 88 points after playing Zelda by Percy Cole.

Mark played 1st Movement from Tuba Concerto (Edward Gregson) and finished just a point behind.

Another notable performance for Drogheda Brass Band was 15year-old Conor Rothwell who finished third in the U-18 category playing Song and Dance by Philip Sparke.

Grace English continued the success with victory in the U-15 section, playing Over The Rainbow.
