Extra parking for rail station
Wednesday March 03 2010
DROGHEDA Borough Council has granted permission to Iarnrod Eireann for a new car park off the Marsh Road to service the railway station. The rail company is set to provide another 100 new parking spaces for local commuters on the busiest rail route in the country.
The site, at the Drogheda side of the viaduct bridge on the Marsh Road, will have a landscaped stair link to the existing car park at the railway station, and also provide ramps for bicycle users.
The development will also provide for an external stairwell link to the existing station car park, landscaping, lighting, CCTV, and a new entrance for vehicular traffic and associated signage at the Marsh Road.
'The proposed new car parking spaces will give people the opportunity to leave their car in a secure place and use the rail services of Iarnrod Eireann,' says Stephen Purcell of KSA (Keith Simpson and Associates), who have submitted the plans of behalf of the council.
'There will be 10 or 11 sets of steps to the station in a landscaped setting, making the most of pedestrian accessibility, whether they are using the car park or walking from the town.'
A bicycle runner under the stairway handrail will mean cyclists won't have to carry their bikes up the stairs and the council will provide extra disabled parking spaces at the existing car park, so that distances are at minimised for those rail users.
There are still no details of the proposed cost of parking available as yet or when the project will be put to tender.
