Get out & walk!
WITH THE fourth series of Operation Transformation well underway on RTÉ, the people of Louth have embraced the new year with gusto, taking out their walking shoes and putting their best foot forward.
Hundreds turned out for the first local event jointly run by the Irish Sports Council and the Local Sports Partnership which organised a walk in Ardee.
The Operation Transformation National Walk took place on Saturday, January 14. Louth Local Sports Partnership organised the walk in Ardee along the Slí the Slainte route. Before the walk the Ardee Slí na Sláinte route was formally launched by Cllr Oliver Tully, cathaoirleach of Louth County Council.
Starting at 11am leaving from Bridge Street Car Park, (beside the River Dee) and follows the 2.5km Sliabh Breagh route. Light refreshments will be served in Ardee Castle after the walk.
All ages and abilities went along on the day and it was particularly great to see families getting involved. The event was ideal for beginners to give it a go.
There will be similar events running around the country culminating in a 5km fun run in the Phoenix Park on Saturday, February 18, at 10am. Louth Local Sports Partnership has also organised a number of follow on walking programmes. Slí na Sláinte stands for 'path to health'. Developed by the Irish Heart Foundation, the routes are marked by bright colourful signposts and are situated at 1km intervals, you'll find Slí na Sláinte walk routes all over Ireland. Simply follow the Km signs, set your pace to suit your enjoyment and you'll quickly feel better and get fitter. You will also experience a great sense of achievement.
