A MAN-eating jellyfish has been found by the side of the River Boyne at Mornington! Well, that was the view of one Drogheda Independent reader who came across it at the weekend! 'I was shocked when I saw it. It was huge, it looked as if it could eat someone!,' the startled local remarked. They came across the giant jellyfish just at the mouth of the Boyne at low tide.
'I've been walking on this beach for a long time and it's the first time I've seen a jellyfish this size. There was a second one close by but it was much smaller.'
The monster jellyfish measured nearly three feet in diameter and the beach walker thought it might be the feared Lion's Mane jellyfish, the largest variety of jellyfish in the world.
Indeed, experts confirmed to the Drogheda Independent on Monday that the possibly deadly creature was the Lion's mane jellyfish.
There have been a number of sightings of the Lion's Mane in waters between Drogheda and Dublin in recent weeks and the venomous creature from the deep can grow up to eight feet in diameter.
It is known to live in colder waters up north and in the Atlantic but has been spotted more and more in the Irish Sea.
It was reported in the last few days from New Hampshire, USA, that one of them broke up on a local beach and caused up to 100 people to be stung.
