Killer jailed over six-week, drug-fuelled crime spree

THREE-AND-A-HALF YEAR SENTENCE FOR ROBBERIES AND THEFTS

Wednesday February 01 2012

A CONVICTED killer who lives in Drogheda has been given a jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to robberies and thefts that happened over a six week period while he was on a cocktail of steroids and cocaine.

Wayne White ( 38), whose address was given as 46 Narrow West Street, last week admitted charges arising out of incidents at premises in the town on various dates from November 2010 to January 2011.

Judge Michael O'shea heard how White's spree started on November 29 2010 when he went into the Xtravision store at Haymarket Bridge shortly before 8 p.m. with a scarf covering his face.

There were two shop assistants on the premises and they later told Gardai how White approached the counter, grabbed one of them and threatened to stab the female worker unless her male colleague handed over the contents of the till.

The female assistant told her colleague to give the man the money and she said she was frightened because it looked like White had something in his fist, though she didn't see what it was. Around €300 was taken and not recovered.

The following day, White broke into the Louth Community Drug and Alcohol centre in Drogheda by smashing a window, but nothing was taken.

On January 5 last year, White broke into a doctors' surgery at Fair Street and stole around 200 prescriptions.

He later told Gardai he had been walking past the premises and it was an opportunistic burglary in which he only intended to steal a laptop. He said he burned most of the prescriptions but tried to get Xanax and diazepam.

Five days later, he robbed around €500 from a woman who was working at Kobi Kids, Peter Street. White went into the store shortly before closing time and told the worker to open the till. She later told Gardai she believed White had a weapon in his pocket and she said she had never been so petrified in her life.

On January 16, White stole €170 from the Londis shop on the Donore Road after he walked in and opened the till himself.

White stole the contents of the till and ran outside where a couple of young men realised what had happened and had tried to hold him at the scene.

One of the men got White into a headlock and was jabbed in the leg with a screwdriver.

As White ran across the Ballsgrove dual carriageway and towards Haymarket Bridge, a number of members of the public ran after him and directed Gardai towards him. He was arrested.
