Make the Tholsel a tourism centre

By Yours Cllr Tommy Byrne.

Dear Sir,

IT is essential if we are to make further head way on tourism that the Tholsel be our new tourist office.

This would have major benefits for the town with the increased footfall injecting a badly needed buzz to local shops.

I am also calling for the Sword and Mace to be put on permanent display here as an added incentive. I am full of confidence that if acted upon this initiative will draw many thousands of extra tourists to Drogheda.

To have the Sword and Mace in hiding and the Tholsel becoming a eyesore beggars belief when both should be the magnet for tourism.

I was also delighted to read Hubert Murphy's article on the Dale in last week's DI. I have been campaigning for years for grants to utilise this historic oasis in the centre of town which will also drag in the many thousands of tourists that visit Newgrange daily.

This is issue is very close to my heart as it was in the Dale where 'I first saw the light of day and the place where life began'.

There is massive potential in this town for tourist trails incorporating the wonderful history and heritage of our town.

The Dale as you might not be aware has links going back to St Patrick with its Holy Well and more famously as the site where Cromwell broke the town's defences and one of his soldiers reputedly drowned in the Dale River Brook.

This was a hiding place for the legendary highway man 'Collier the Robber' also.

We the people of Drogheda need to be proactive in trying to steer the town out of this recession and this is one issue we can have a positive influence on for Drogheda's future generations.
