THE new one-way system on Francis Street has been described as 'a waste of time' by one local resident who claims cars are continuing to drive up and down the street.
Danny McEvoy, who lives at the top of Francis Street, said a lot of people were not obeying the new system and revealed that about half the traffic continues to travel up the street despite the new one-way system which means cars are only permitted to travel down Francis Street towards Constitution Hill.
'It appears to me that the whole thing is a waste of time,' said Mr McEvoy.
'It is about 50/50 coming up the street as going down it. A lot of people aren't adhering to the new rules.'
He said the new system did not benefit either motorists or those living on the street.
'It's very hard to blame people because if you get an inexperienced driver how can they be expected to know it has changed. They are trying to preserve Laurence's Gate and yet they are putting all the traffic under it.
'I think this system is the worst idea you could make in the town. They never discussed it with any of the residents on Francis Street, the first we heard was when we read about it in the Drogheda Independent.
' We didn't have a problem with it being two-way, we were fine with it, there was enough parking and everything,' said Danny.
'People are flying up the street, there's going to be an accident one of these days.'
