NEWGRANGE has become an even bigger hit thanks to modern technology.

' We got emails from the likes of New Zealand, Brazil and elsewhere from people who were watching the sunrise with us thanks to the webcast produced by the OPW,' stated Clare Tuffy from the Bru na Boinne Centre.

The winter solstice is now one of the biggest events on the world calendar with a lucky few allowed to enter the chamber in the hope of viewing the shaft of light moving slowly up through the complex.

Unfortunately this year it was too cloudy and many were left disappointed not to see the historic moment, but overall, being there is what its all about.

Every year a lottery takes place and this time some 34,000 had applied for just a handful of places in the chamber with some of the winners coming from the USA, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK.

'It has gained the status of being a national event and I didn't think it could get any better but the webcast has made it a truly international event now,' Clare added.

'There's a great feeling about the day now and it gets so much respect and attention. We should be very proud of this little part of County Meath'.

Although the weather was the winner this year, Clare feels the event will attract even more interest in the future.

'Unfortunately we can't do an awful lot about that but the gathering still enjoyed the day,' she remarked.
