Over €660,000 in funding to improve accident blackspots
OVER €660,000 in NRA funding is on its way to improve two accident blackspots at the Boyne Valley Hotel and Beaulieu junction.
'I've had many representations from locals on this issue. We all know funds are scarce but you cannot put a price on human life. These measures are badly needed. The Boyne Valley Hotel/castlewood/roschoill junction is to be redesigned entirely at a cost of €150,000. This will involve the installation of traffic lights, a central island and the introduction of a right turn lane. Both the Beaulieu and Newtown Stalaban junctions will see a series of traffic calming and safety improvement measures introduced at a cost of €80,000,' stated Deputy Gerald Nash.
A total of €665,000 in NRA funding has been approved for road improvement projects in the Drogheda area, the Labour deputy added.
' The remaining monies will be used for general road maintenance in Drogheda. It is very important that we do not allow our roads to fall into disrepair. Ignoring such problems is really a false economy which results in a much larger bill in the long run. It's very much a case of a stitch in time saves nine. Now that the funding has been approved I want to ensure that this work is carried out without delay and I will be following up with the NRA, Drogheda Borough Council and Louth County Council to that end.'
Minister Fergus O'dowd and other public representatives have also welcomed the news.
