Wednesday September 01 2010

LOUTH VEC received the keys to the new extension at Drogheda Institute of Further Education last Friday.

The keys were handed over to the Principal of DIFE, David McDonnell by Ciarán Farrell of Cunnane and Donaghy Construction Ltd.

The handover was witnessed by Dr Pádraig Kirk, CEO of Louth VEC and Ms Siobhán Ní Éanaigh of McGarry Ní Éanaigh Architects, who have an office in Drogheda.

The new extension includes two spacious lecture theatres, which will be capable of accommodating up to 50 students each, a new hightech computer suite, a large fashion design studio and a spacious interior design studio.

Each classroom will be equipped with the latest technology and machinery in the respective subject areas. The extension also includes office space, storerooms and staff and student toilet facilities.

The VEC intends to have the extension finished and furnished in time for the return of the students to the college.

'The extension is a major boost to the college. It will allow us to cater more adequately for an ever increasing number of students and it will add significantly to the college's bank of existing facilities and resources,' stated Davy McDonnell.

'The extension will also allow us to consolidate the teaching and learning activities of the college at our Twenties site.'

DIFE provides accredited post-Leaving Certificate courses in a range of disciplines including technology and design, business and humanities, information technology and computer studies, leisure and tourism, community and health care and applied science.

The college numbers have risen dramatically this year and a formal opening of the extension is planned to take place later in the year.
