Search resumes for fisherman off Louth coast

Wednesday February 01 2012

THE SEARCH continued at first light on Tuesday for a man who was reported to have fallen overboard from a fishing vessel near Clogherhead.

The first reports reached Clogherhead RNLI from the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Dublin at around lunchtime on Sunday when the skipper of the 'Zenith', which fishes prawns out of its home port of Kilkeel, Co Down, contacted the Coast Guard seeking assistance in locating a man who fell overboad from the trawler.

The man is believed to be a foreign national in his thirties.

The Clogherhead Lifeboat, Doris Bleasdale, raced to the scene and various other fishing vessels also gave assistance.

Sea conditions worsened as the afternoon progressed and the volunteer crew returned to Port Oriel harbour when darkness fell that evening.

Following an extensive search of the area by the rescue helicopter there was still no sign of the missing fisherman on Monday evening.
