Slane ban is not so easy
BANNING trucks from Slane may seem like a simple solution but it is not a simple matter, Bill Sweeney senior executive officer of Meath County Council told April's meeting of the Slane area council.
Councillor Anne Dillon Gallagher had asked how the council's truck ban in Slane is to be implemented.
Speaking about the recent protest organised by Slane residents, Cllr Gallagher said traffic that day was 'horrendous' and 'it enforces the need for a ban.'
Executive officer Bill Sweeney said council officials had met with the National Roads Authority (NRA) in recent weeks to discuss the lorry ban.
At that meeting he said the accident history at Slane was considered.
He said the most serious problems in Slane relate to the lower end of the hill, adding that the NRA are 'looking at what additional safety measures can be taken.'
'They are examining the impact of things such as additional speed controls, sinage and other such measures,' he said.
Mr Sweeney said council contact with the NRA is 'ongoing' and a full report 'will come back to the main council meeting.'
'Banning HGV's is not a simple matter,' he said.
