WINDOWS REMOVED ON HISTORIC OLD BUILDING AFTER lying untouched for years, the Tholsel building in West Street is now a hive of activity, with window specialists from Kells, Co Meath moving in at daybreak on Monday morning to begin the task of restoring the original sash windows.
'The biggest job is the windows, as the panes were plate glass, which is highly dangerous, and they will be replaced with laminate,' says Kevin Walsh, from Tullyallen firm Walsh Joinery, overseeing the project.
' The heating system was antiquated so that is being replaced, with the entire building being rewired.
Frank Buckley's electrical company, also local, will work alongside Gaffney's plumbers from Kells on that.'
The budget is on a shoestring, with only € 300,000 allocated for the ambitious job.
'There were a good few leaks in the roof that had to be fixed, and new fire doors will be fitted, so the main priority for us is to get it rainproof and fire safe,' adds Kevin.
'Our contract finishes here on August 27th, and there will pretty much just be a downstairs area with a desk, so I'm not sure what plans the council have for the building after that.'
