Townspeople get chance to name new link road

THE suggestion by Greenhills TY students to name the new link road between their school and Newfoundwell Road 'Nagle-Rice Road' received a lukewarm welcome at the recent borough council meeting, with members agreeing to put it out for public consultation.

The proposal was made by Sarah Gallagher and Grainne McDonnell, as the new road links the two schools of Greenhills and St Joseph's CBS, with the names of founders Nano Nagle and Br Edmund Rice being joined.

Whilst all agreed it was a very good suggestion from the students, with the mayor commending the girls on 'an excellent name for the road', reservations were shown at the double-barrelled nature of the title.

Suggestions of names within the meeting included Coogan's Run while Cllr Kevin Callan proposed naming it after the late Senator Ted Kennedy.

' Whilst the name Nagle-Rice Road has its merits, I think this would be an ideal opportunity to engage with the townspeople, and give them a say in naming their own roads,' said Cllr Frank Maher.

'I propose putting it out to public consultation and receiving suggestions from people living in the area. New roads are rare and probably will become more so, and we should welcome suggestions from many parties.'

Cllr Frank Gallagher agreed, concluding that the two people suggested were not native to the town, and whilst it may very well end up being the name used, they should also wait for more ideas to be put forward from the public.
