Traffic measures 'useless'

'COMPLETELY useless' is how a resident of Shamrock Villas has described the rumble strips on the Ballymakenny Road, installed by the council in an attempt to alleviate the dangers of entering and exiting the estate.

'They haven't slowed the traffic down one bit,' says one resident.

'In fact, my parents had a near miss trying to turn into the entrance just yesterday, when a woman came flying round the bend and almost crashed into them.'

'It was a waste of time and money, and what really needs to be done is improve the visibililty by cutting the hedge, but I suppose it's a start.'

The one difference it has made is that the speeding cars tend not to blast their horn at residents turning into their own homes.

'Because of the road markings, they know they are in the wrong, but it really hasn't stopped them speeding one little bit, and much more will need to be done.'

Nevertheless, Cllr Gerald Nash has welcomed the introduction of the anti-speeding measures on the Ballymakenny Road.

'I have been working with local residents to provide a solution to this long-standing road safety problem,' the deputy mayor said.

'The Council and An Garda Siochána approved the measures and I am confident that they will be effective in modifying driver behaviour.'
