Ladies take centre stage for Championship finals

Stabannon Ladies will put their SFC title on the line on Sunday.
Wednesday September 08 2010
WITH an All-Ireland final on the horizon, Louth Ladies football will have a spring in its step on Sunday when McGeough Park in Haggardstown hosts all three club championship finals.
It's an early start with junior decider between St Fechin's and Newtown Blues throwing in at 11.30am, followed by the IFC final between St Mochta's and St Patrick's at 12.45pm.
The senior decider between the holders Stabannon Parnells and St Mary's gets underway at 2pm.
SFC Final --Stabannon Parnells v St Mary's --2pm
AFTER disposing of Cooley Kickhams by 20 points in the semi-final, holders Stabannon Parnells will be raging hot favourites to retain their crown on Sunday afternoon.
The mid-Louth outfit finally arrived on the big stage last season when they edged out Naomh Malachi in a marathon decider that went all the way to extra-time in a replay.
They are back-boned by inspirational captain, Grace Lynch, who will lead Louth out at Croke Park on September 26th, but it's by no means a 'one-woman show' in a team that's packed with talent, including Ann-Marie Lynch and Tara Lynch, Aine McGee and rising star, Grace Rogers.
While they will be underdogs, St Mary's won't lie down without a fight and in Kelly Farrelly and Maria Reid they possess two forwards in top form.
The former netted the winning goal as the Ardee girls disposed of Roche Emmets in the semi-final, while Reid has been a regular name on the Louth scoring list this season.
In Michelle McMahon they possess one of the best midfielders in the county and, while Stabannon will be strongly fancied to prevail, a good start by St Mary's could make this a closer contest than many are predicting.
IFC Final --St Mochta's v St Patrick's --12.45pm
IN the Intermediate decider, St Mochta's and St Patrick's meet for the first time ever in a championship match. Both teams are backboned by county stars with St Mochta's Laura O'Neill and Grainne Mackin coming up against county colleagues, Kate Flood, Deirdre O'Hare and Caoimhe Breen.
Both sides impressed in their respective smei-finals with St Mochta's brushing aside St Kevin's by 4-7 to 0-9, while Pat's saw off Naomh Mairtin by 0-14 to 1-2, while they racked up the same points tally in the quarter-final against Dowdallshill.
The wide open spaces of McGeough Park should suit a youthful St Mochta's team who like to play and expansive game and aside from their county stars they will be looking to Laura McDonnell, Clare O'Rourke, Rachel Farrell and Emma Quinn.
After a few years out of the limelight, Pats have emerged as a real force again in 2010. Inspired by Flood and her county teammates, manager Vin O'Hare will also be hoping for big displays from Catherine O'Connor, Karen Feely and Grainne Finnegan, who should ensure they are wellequipped to make this one of the closest contests of the season in any grade.
JFC Final --St Fechin's v Newtown Blues --11.30am
ST FECHIN'S and Newtown Blues get the action underway at 11.30am and both sides have shown good form on the way to the decider. Fechin's brushed aside the challenge of Cuchulainn Gaels in round one, before disposing of a fancied Naomh Fionbarra outfit in the quarter-final. They then saw off Glen Emmets in the semi-final last week and will be looking to the three McDermott sisters, Kelly Cunningham and Zara McEvoy for inspiration on Sunday as they bid to make amends for last year's final defeat to Dowdallshill.
Newtown Blues, meanwhile have also been threatening to make a breakthough at this level for the past couple of seasons, having lost out in the 2008 final to St Mochta's.
They will look to Catherine Smith, Aine McCormack and Lisa Kelly - niece of Irish soccer stars Gary Kelly and Ian Harte - on Sunday.
In what is expected to be a tight contest, the midfield battle between Lynch and Kelly and the McDermott sisters is expected to be key to the final outcome.
