Lady Luck deserts Louth once again

KIERAN Maguire bemoaned the bit of luck that he believed historically eluded Louth in close-run games as he reflected on another near miss by the Wee County.

'Of course it's a tough one to take. A bit of a rub of the green on the day might have changed things a lot.

'It's unfortunate, but it's typical of Louth, also-rans. I honestly thought these boys could come through this.'

The manager was wholesome in his praise for the players' efforts.

'The boys worked so hard out there, they kept at it and it, and were never beat.

'I couldn't have asked any more of them, they are a great bunch of fellas and work so hard. I couldn't be more proud of them.

'The referee didn't do us any favours. Now, I'm not saying he beat us, but you could see what was going on. That's football for you. You just have to take what comes.'

For all that Dublin missed, the Reds also let some crucial scoring opportunities slip by.

'That's what happens. That's the level you are playing at. If you don't put away your scores when you have the chance, you end up regretting it.'

Nonetheless, the Dundalk Young Irelands clubman was happy enough with the way things stood at the interval when the Dubs led by 1-2 to 0-4 after recording nine wides.

'If we had been told before the game we were going to be a point down at half-time we would have accepted it.'

However, in the end a victory against one of the premier counties wasn't to be.

'Of course it (a win) would have been a great lift for Louth overall. It's just one of those things. We never seem to get that bit of luck to get into the next round,' Maguire concluded.
