Newtown 2-21 Dundalk YI 1-4 DUNDALK Young Irelands proved no match for Newtown Blues in Rathmullen on Sunday morning as the Drogheda side eased to a 20-point voctory. The visitors made a bright start and led after five minutes, but a John Kermode goal on the 20 minute mark put Blues in control.
A penalty late in the half converted by Dermot Mone, gave Young Irelands a sliver of hope, but they only managed two points in the second period as Blues got in some early season shoooting practice.
Best for the winners were Jason Delehan, Kermode and Moonan.
Brian Stephen Cooley Kickhams 1-8 Geraldines 0-6 THERE were no shocks in FR McEvoy Park on Sunday morning as an understrength Cooley Kickhams saw off a youthful Geraldines.
The result was in the balance wight up to the 58th minute when Patrick Sheelan sealed the points for the home side with the only goal of the game.
An error-ridden first half ended all square at 0-3 apiece and the fare didn't improve much after the break.
However Cooley's greater experience told in the end as they scraped over the line with a flurry of late scores.
Best for Cooley on the day were John Kane and Eddie Moley in defence, Keith White in midfield and Darren White and Sheelan in attack.
For Gers Nicky Mackin, Tiernan Hand, Shane Thornton and Barry Hamilton impressed.
