WITH such an array of top class golf courses along the east coast, it’s no wonder that the area produces so many renowned golfers, writes Sean Wall.

Another young ‘swinger’ with the potential to figure prominently on the amateur scene over the next few years is undoubtedly David Winters, a member of Seapoint GC.

Although only in his fourth year playing the sport, the 15-year-old St Joseph’s CBS schoolboy already has a handicap of eight and hopes to lower that considerably before the end of the year.

‘I would be happy to get it down to five by the end of the season,’ said the young man from Newtownstalaban, who lives a stone’s throw from Seapoint.

‘Living so close to the course, I go down to play most evenings. I used to play pitch & putt and just progressed into the golf.’

David has won numerous competitions and was the club’s Junior Golfer of the Year in 2003. He admits that it is more difficult to win competitions now, with such a low handicap.

He recently qualified to play in the Leinster Boys Championship and finished a very creditable eighth. Two other young golfers from Seapoint also played in the championship, Michael Butterly and Kevin McMorrow.

A member of St Joseph’s CBS golf team, David has also played with Seapoint in this year’s Towns Cup and Barton Cup teams.
