Scoring double sinks battling St Fechin's

Wednesday August 18 2010

TWO goals on either side of half time from last year's beaten championship finalists fended off a battling Fechins display on a glorious Friday evening in the GAA grounds.

Pearse Óg had the advantage of the wind in the opening half and it was used to good effect as they got the opening score after five minutes of play.

A combination of tough tackling and resilient defending from the Termonfeckin men kept scoring low as they took the lead themselves with David Stephenson scoring two frees as well as an excellent Cathal Ryan point from the '45'.

Mattie Boland and Aaron Caffrey exchanged scores as Pearse Óg tagged on another two points to move in front before they struck for the opening goal of the game.

A momentary lapse in the Fechins defence allowed Gerard Smyth to play a crossfield free to fellow Louth player Shane Callan who blasted the ball to the net.

The short whistle came soon after with Pearse Óg leading 1-5 to 0-4.

St Fechins were dealt another major body blow after half time as Gerard Smith hit for a major.

A point straight after suddenly turned a close game into an eight-point lead.

But the Green and Whites got themselves back into the game when a high ball from the sideline was batted out by the keeper and flicked back into the net by the awaiting Óisín Byrne.

With 12 minutes remaining another Pearse Óg goal gave them a seven point advantage in the final quarter. St Fechins never gave up and points from substitute Matthew McEvoy and Barry Devlin gave the side hope with only minutes left.

A Brian McCabe point in the last play of the game gave Pearse Óg a six point win.
