A Family affair as club gets two gold

Wednesday February 10 2010

HOLY Family Boxing Club took home two medals at Sunday's Michael Andrews Tournament in Dublin thanks to wins for Christy and Michael Nevin.

In what was a successful weekend for the local club, Vasyl Chechensky also picked up a runnerup medal in the warm-up event for the upcoming Louth and Leinster Championships.

Christy Nevin, fighting in the Boy 1 36kg division, was making his debut in the competition and got off to a great start in the quarter-finals, easily dispatching Michael O'Donnell from Drimnagh BC on a 5-0 scoreline.

The 11-year-old then earned a spot in the final with a confortable 4-0 win over Lee Jackson from Sacre Couer BC.

Despite this being his first proper championship appearance, Nevin showed no nerves in the final against David Clark from Trinity Boys BC, boxing on the front foot to win 5-1 in a show of what is to come from this talented youngster.

Michael Nevin, competing in the Boy 2 31kg division, also impressed, showed a vast improvement from last year to beat reigning Leinster champion Thomas Quinn in the quarter-final 3-2 with a fine display of head and body punching.

Nevin then eased past John Higgins from Tolerton BC as his fast punching forced the referee to stop the fight in round one.

A much tougher bout awaited in the final against his cousin – who is also called Michael Nevin – from Portlaoise BC.

It was an absorbing contest, but the Holy Family boy showed great determination to overcome his relative by a score of 5-3.

Meanwhi le , Chechensky showed great promise with a nail-biting 3-2 win over Roy Sheehy from Paulstown BC in the Boy 2 36kg semi-final – setting up a decider against Martin Stokes of Mulhuddart BC.

However, in another close encounter, the Holy Family boxer was on the other end of a 3-2 score but will be hoping he can build on his experience for the upcoming Louth and Leinster Championships.
